The Bravery – Honest Mistake

This is a great gym song as well as one of my favorites to write by. The lyrics are very evocative, and every time I hear it I create the backstory for the character.

An Honest Mistake

by

The Bravery

People
They don’t mean a thing to you
They move right through you
Just like your breath
But sometimes
I still think of you
And I just wanted to
Just wanted you to know
My old friend…
I swear I never meant for this
I never meant…

Don’t look at me that way
It was an honest mistake
Don’t look at me that way
It was an honest mistake
An honest mistake

Sometimes
I forget I’m still awake
I fuck up and say these things out loud

My old friend…
I sweat I never meant for this
I never meant…

Don’t look at me that way
It was an honest mistake
Don’t look at me that way
It was an honest mistake
An honest mistake

Don’t look at me that way
It was an honest mistake
Don’t look at me that way
It was an honest mistake
An honest mistake

I like music when I write, though I don’t have a set process. I do love music though, so I’m going to start a new segment on my blog where I post lyrics to my favorite songs called Words to Write By.

Here’s my first pick. I love all Ben Harper’s songs, but this one especially. When I hear it I can clearly feel the heartache of a person who’s given up on love. That empathy is easy to flip around into the joy of someone having found love. Here are the lyrics, if you’re interested, check out iTunes.

Another Lonely Day

Ben Harper

Yes indeed, I’m alone again.

And here comes emptiness crashing in.

It’s either love or hate,

I can’t find in between,

’cause I’ve been with witches and I’ve been with a queen.

It wouldn’t have worked out anyway.

So now it’s just another lonely day.

Further along we just may.

But for now it’s just another lonely day.
