Morning After- Dialogue

Here are the 5 things to remember about dialogue.  This is from my playwriting teacher, but I think it applies to all writing.

  1. People lie.
  2. People don’t listen.
  3. People aren’t identical.
  4. People don’t exposit
  5. People say the dumbest things

  1. Here’s expositional dialogue:

“Hi Mark, my friend from New York who flew three tousand miles to be here tonight.”

mark knows who he is and how he got there; the speakers know too, so this dialogue is forced– they are only saying it to inform the reader.
